How each method works
Snaking (cabling)
A flexible steel cable with a cutting or retrieving head is rotated through the pipe by a hand tool or motorized drum. It bores through the obstruction or grabs it. Cables come in sizes from small bathroom-sink augers to heavy sectional machines for 4- to 6-inch main lines. This is the backbone of most drain cleaning calls.
Hydro jetting
A high-pressure hose with a nozzle is fed into the pipe. Rear jets propel it forward and flush debris back toward the access point; forward jets break up blockages. When snaking is usually enough
- A single fixture is clogged for the first time.
- The obstruction is a discrete object: a toy, a wad of paper, a hair clump.
- You need immediate relief and can schedule a more thorough cleaning later.
- The pipe is known to be fragile and the provider prefers a gentle approach.
When jetting tends to be the better fit
- The same line clogs repeatedly, especially kitchen lines with grease.
- A cable clears the line but flow is still sluggish, indicating build-up on the walls.
- Fine roots or biofilm are present along a stretch of pipe.
- The line needs to be clean for a camera inspection or in preparation for a lining repair.
- Multi-family or light commercial kitchens on a maintenance schedule.
Cost considerations without specific numbers

In general, jetting involves larger equipment, more time, and more water, so it is usually priced higher than a standard cabling visit. Whether it is worth the difference depends on how often the line clogs and what a camera shows. A single jetting that prevents several cabling visits can be the more economical choice; for a one-time obstruction, cabling usually is.

Frequently asked questions
Can hydro jetting damage PVC pipe?
Sound PVC is routinely jetted. Problems arise with improperly glued joints or already-damaged pipe. A provider selects pressure and nozzle for the pipe type.
Does snaking make the clog worse?
Rarely, when done properly. In some cases a cable can compact a soft blockage, but an experienced operator adjusts technique. Chemical drain cleaners used beforehand are a bigger concern because they can splash back during cabling.
How long does each method take?
Cabling a single drain is often a short visit. Jetting a main line can take considerably longer because it cleans the full pipe. Actual times depend on the provider, access, and the condition of the line.
