How roots get into a sewer pipe
Tree roots grow toward moisture and nutrients, and a sewer lateral offers both. Older laterals were assembled from short sections of vitrified clay or cast iron with joints every few feet. As pipe ages and soil shifts, those joints open slightly, and warm, moist air escaping through them attracts fine root hairs. Once a root enters, it thickens and branches inside the pipe, creating a net that traps paper, grease, and solids.
Modern PVC laterals with solvent-welded joints are far less vulnerable, but older neighborhoods throughout Union County, including much of Linden, have laterals that predate PVC.
Signs that roots may be the problem
- Main line clogs that recur every few months, often seasonally
- Slow drains throughout the house that improve after cleaning, then return
- Gurgling toilets and drains
- A cable machine returns root fragments
- Sinkholes, soft spots, or unusually lush grass along the sewer path
- Mature trees within roughly 20 to 30 feet of the sewer route (a risk factor, not a diagnosis)

Why roots are worse than an ordinary clog
A grease clog, once cleared, is gone until new grease accumulates. A root intrusion has a living source outside the pipe. Cutting the roots back is like pruning; they regrow from the same entry point. And as roots thicken, they exert pressure that can widen cracks and shift pipe sections, turning a maintenance issue into a structural one.

Should the tree be removed?
Not usually as a first step. Removing a tree does not remove roots already in the pipe, and a healthy tree has value. The more effective fix is sealing the pipe so roots cannot enter. If a tree is directly over a failing lateral and replacement is planned, an arborist can advise on root pruning or removal. Street trees are typically municipal property; check with your town before any work on them.
Can you prevent roots in the first place?
- Know where your lateral runs before planting new trees; keep large species away from it.
- If you are replacing a lateral, PVC with solvent-welded joints offers few entry points.
- Address minor intrusions early, before they widen joints.

It varies with the tree species, the size of the opening, and the pipe. Some lines need attention yearly; others more often. A provider who has seen the line on camera can suggest an interval, and increasing frequency is a sign the entry point is widening.
Do copper sulfate or foaming root killers work?
Provider-applied foaming treatments can slow regrowth after cutting. Products poured down a drain rarely reach the roots in effective concentration. Some products are restricted or discouraged locally; ask the provider.
Will roots damage my foundation?
